080210.jpgToday we begin a new message series, "When God's People Pray." I believe this is the most important message series that I will preach this year. My goal in this series is that each of us individually and the church here at Full Life as a whole, can take a giant leap forward in powerful and effective prayer. James 5:16b (NIV) The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.  Powerful and effective prayer is what God wants for you and our church. That kind of prayer stems from a deep relationship with God. Prayer is communication with God, not simply saying words. When you communicate with God the way that God instructs, amazing things happen. That's what God wants for you, that's what God wants for Full Life.

My message title today is "God's Heart For Us." I'm going to be talking about what God's heart is for us on the topic of prayer. Sadly, many Christians don't pray or don't pray very much.  Many believers don't seem to see many answers to their prayers and so they get discouraged and give up. However faith without prayer doesn't make much sense. Prayer is really the highest expression of faith. Think about it this way. Why should I go to my office at 5:30 am and spend an hour reading my Bible and talking into the thin air? Sounds a little crazy, doesn't it? And prayer would be crazy if there was no one listening. But I believe that someone is listening when I pray and not just anyone. The one who hears when I pray in my office early in the morning is the God who created the universe. Psalms 4:3 (NIV) Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD will hear when I call to him.  Not only do the godly have a relationship with the Lord, they believe that the Lord hears when they call to Him.

How strong is your faith? You can find the answer to that question by looking at your prayer life. The more you pray, the more faith you have. Some would object and say, Pastor Dan, I've got things to do, I can't pray all the time. The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV) pray continually.  You can pray continually because you can pray when you're doing other things. You can be in a constant attitude of prayer. How strong is the faith of this church? The answer lies in our prayer life, both personal and corporate.  God's heart for Full Life in 2008 is for us to grow much more powerful in our prayer.

Not only does God hear when we pray, but He draws near to people who pray. Deuteronomy 4:7 (NIV) What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him?  Only the people of God have the Lord draw near when they pray to Him. I want God near to me all the time. I want God near to this church, all the time. So, we're going to learn a lot more about prayer in this series and put what we learn into practice. So what is God's heart for us in prayer, what does He want us to do?
