080525.jpgCurrently we're in a message series called "What Jesus Taught." In this series, I'm highlighting topics where what Jesus taught runs contrary to what the average person believes or practices. Today, my message is entitled "What Jesus Taught About Money." You might be surprised to learn that the Bible has a lot to say about money. There are more than 2350 verses in the Bible giving instruction in handling money and possessions. Jesus taught more about money than just about any subject.

Today, I'm going to just look at one passage in which Jesus taught about money. However, I think the message today is an incredibly important one for every person here. When believers don't understand how to handle money God's way, they rob themselves of great blessing and set themselves up for disaster.  Why is how you handle money so important? Handling money is important because it influences your relationship with the Lord. The most fundamental the Bible teaches about money is that all that we have is a gift from God.  1 Chronicles 29:11-12 (NIV) Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. ... Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things.  So, the money you have is not really yours. God has given you the money you have to use for Him. So money is a test from God, to see if you use it for yourself or invest it for God.

Jesus told a story in Matthew 25 called the parable of the talents. In the story, a master went on a trip and gave five talents to one servant, two talents to another and one talent to a third. The servant with five talents invested the master's money and gained five more, the servant with two talents gained two more. However, the servant with one talent did not invest it, but buried it in the ground, earning no return for the master. When the master returned, he commended both of the first two servants who invested their money for the master. Matthew 25:21 (NIV) His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.  Those who invest God's money well are rewarded by God.  However, the servant who buried his money and gave his master no return was rebuked. Matthew 25:26,30 (NIV) "His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! ... Throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'  Those who do not give God a return on the money He has entrusted to them, prove they are not God's servants at all. They've failed the money test.

Today, we want to learn what Jesus taught about money so we can be good and faithful servants with what God has entrusted us. We're going to look at three questions about finances and discover Jesus' answers.
