"Dear Dad, It is with the utmost sorrow that I am writing you. I have decided to elope with my new girlfriend Joan and thought a letter would avoid a scene with you. I knew that you and Mom would not approve of Joan and her piercings, tattoos, tight motorcycle clothes and the fact that she is much older than me. But, she really understands me and I really like her. She has a trailer in the woods with lots of firewood for the winter and wants to have lots of children. Don't worry Dad, I'm 15 and I know how to take care of myself. We'll be back someday so you can get to know all your grandchildren. Your son, John." "P.S. Dad, none of the above is true. I'm over at Jimmy's house. I wanted to remind you that there could be worse things in life than my report card that's in the desk drawer. I love you! Call me when it's safe to come home." Every father here, I believe wants to be a good father for their children. What does it take to be a good father? Ephesians 6:4 (NIV) Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Here, God's Word instructs fathers to raise their children by teaching them about God. The weight of that responsibility does not lie with the church or with the mother, but with the father. Teaching your children about God is what a good father does. However, a good father should not exasperate their children. I think that one of the biggest things that exasperates children is when a father says, "Do as I say, not as I do." You can't train a child properly with that attitude. What is the most important thing that your father taught you? Kind of sad that a lot of people can't think of much of anything their father had taught them. How can you be a good father? You must realize that each father is also a child to his Father in heaven. When a father obeys his heavenly Father, he has credibility to train his children in the ways of God. If a father does not obey his heavenly father, then he will have little credibility to train his children. So today, my final message in this series is entitled "What Jesus Taught About Obedience." I would subtitle it, "How To Be A Good Father." We're going to look at two paragraphs which are Jesus' conclusion to His sermon on the Mount that we've been looking at the last month. To sum it up before we start, today we're going to learn that - A good father is one who obeys his heavenly Father. Message Audio |

Happy Father's Day! It's not easy being a father these days, you never quite know
how your children are going to surprise you next. One day, a father walked past
his teenage son's bedroom and was stunned to see the bed made and everything
picked up. Then he saw an envelope laying on the pillow addressed to "Dad."
With trembling hands, he opened the letter and began to read.
