080601.jpgThis week we're going to look at "What Jesus Taught About Worry." The dictionary defines worry as "mental distress or agitation resulting from concern usually for something impending or anticipated." My definition of worry is "fear of something bad happening in the future." I've worried about all kinds of things in my life. Once upon a time I worried that I would never get married and have children. This July Carol and I will have been married 15 years and we have seven children. Several years ago, I worried that my back pain would never get better. Today, God has healed me. When I left my full time job to go to seminary and into the ministry, I worried how I would ever support my family. God has been faithful and all our needs have been met.

Anything you can be afraid of, people worry about. The list is endless. People worry about health, relationships, jobs, careers, children, health and money. The vast majority of things we worry about never happen and even if they do, most aren't as bad as we think they will be. However, today, we're going to learn some lessons from Jesus on defeating worry and replacing worry with something much more productive.

Last week, I spoke on "What Jesus Taught About Money." We learned that that there are two places you can store your treasure, on earth or in heaven. There are two visions you can have in life, to be generous or to be stingy. There are two masters you can serve in life, either God or Money. The three right choices to make is to store your treasure in heaven, have a generous vision and to serve God in life, not Money. If you missed the message, you can order a CD or listen to it on our website.

This week, my message is entitled "What Jesus Taught About Worry." The passage that we'll be looking at this morning in Matthew 6, immediately follows the one that we studied last Sunday. It begins like this: Matthew 6:25 (NIV) "Therefore I tell you, do not worry ..." Whenever you see the word "therefore" in your Bible, you need to understand what the word is there for.  What Jesus is saying is that when you have the right attitude toward money, you won't worry about a lot of the things that people worry about that money can buy. In fact, if you can really learn the lesson that Jesus taught, you won't worry about anything. That would be great, wouldn't it.

Worry can simply exhaust you. It takes your mind of productive things and sends it down a negative spiral. Worry often leads to depression. Worry makes people difficult to deal with. Worry leads to stress and is bad for your physical health.  Anybody here enjoy worrying? I didn't think so. We all want to stop worrying, so let's dig into this passage on what Jesus taught about worrying.
